CAN A CITY BE SMART IF IT DOESN’T UNDERSTAND PEOPLE?

Artificial intelligence is transforming tourism and urban development. But the real challenge may not be incorporating more technology. It may be understanding the kind of life we want to create.

1. A CONNECTED CITY IS NOT NECESSARILY A SMART CITY.

Sensors, data, artificial intelligence and digital services are changing the way we live in and experience cities.

Technology allows us to anticipate demand, optimize resources and design new experiences. Yet a city can be extraordinarily connected while still failing to respond to the needs of the people who live there.

What is the point of processing millions of data points if we fail to understand the people behind them?

2. HUMAN INTELLIGENCE MUST EVOLVE, TOO.

Innovation is not simply about adopting new tools. It also requires developing our ability to listen, coexist, recognize differences and understand human needs.

A city may offer advanced digital services and still feel inaccessible, impersonal or unwelcoming.

Efficiency helps us organize resources. Human sensitivity helps us decide what those resources are for.

The challenge is not to choose between artificial intelligence and human intelligence, but to ensure that they evolve together.

3. TOURISM ALLOWS US TO EXPERIENCE THIS RELATIONSHIP.

An app can organize our itinerary, translate information or help us discover a destination.

But when we remember a journey, other things often come to mind: an unexpected conversation, someone’s hospitality, a meaningful encounter or the feeling of discovering something that was never included in the itinerary.

A destination becomes memorable not only because of what it offers, but because of what it allows us to experience.

Technology can make those experiences more accessible. People give them meaning.

4. INNOVATION ALSO MEANS DECIDING WHAT WE WANT TO LEAVE BEHIND.

Every urban decision shapes a part of the future: a public space, a mobility solution, an accessible service or a new opportunity for human connection.

Each of these decisions leaves an impression on the people who live in or visit a city.

That is why the question should not be limited to which technologies we can introduce.

What kind of life are we making possible through them?

Innovation becomes meaningful when technological capabilities are transformed into real opportunities for people.

5. THE INTERNATIONAL TOURISM FAIR: A STARTING POINT.

The upcoming International Tourism Fair in Buenos Aires offers an opportunity to bring these questions to the people and organizations shaping the future of destinations.

Representatives from different countries, cities, companies and institutions can contribute their perspectives on artificial intelligence, urban innovation, accessibility and new tourism experiences.

I am particularly interested in listening to those leading these initiatives, understanding the problems they are trying to solve and exploring how they evaluate the human impact of their decisions.

Because behind every technological project lies a question worth asking:

Are we innovating to introduce technology, or are we innovating to improve people’s lives?

GOING BEYOND INNOVATION

Are we building cities capable of processing more information, or cities capable of understanding people more deeply?

Perhaps genuine progress begins when we stop treating these possibilities as alternatives and start developing them together.
